Laetare, meaning joyful, comes near the halfway point of Lent, 21 days before Easter, and is the Fourth Sunday of Lent. After days of penance, sombreness, fasting, being deprived, we are given this day to relax and recharge, to examine or even adjust our Lenten journey, to look ahead to the joys of Easter morning. Instead of purple, rose-coloured vestments are worn. These same rites were practiced in Advent, on the third Sunday, called Gaudete. Around the 17th century, a Laetare Sunday tradition began that involved people making pilgrimages to the church of their baptism, bringing along family members. Because of these trips, the Fourth Sunday of Lent became known as Mothering Day, visiting the “mother church”. Such visits were and are a meaningful way to contemplate the gifts we received at baptism. A Laetare pilgrimage to “mother church” gave rise to the custom of people going to visit their mother on this day. The celebration continues in this and other European countries and is much like our Mother’s Day celebration.
Please pray for the happy repose of the soul of Rose Getty and for her family and friends.
