The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

This holy day of obligation takes place on Thursday 15th August and Mass will be celebrated at 10am. Mass will also be held at Ss Peter & Paul Newport at 7pm.

Canonisation of Cardinal John Henry Newman

The Vatican has announced that on Sunday 13th October in Rome, John Henry Newman will be canonised a saint of the Catholic Church. Newman’s life and legacy are a phenomenon both in the Church of England and then, subsequently, as a Catholic after his conversion. He founded The Oratory in this country which is now flourishing and sent much of the latter part of his life in Birmingham. It is impossible to do justice to this outstanding modern Doctor of the church, who perhaps one day will also be declared a Doctor of the Church, such is the breadth, depth and richness of his life. He preached and lived the Christian faith and wrote extensively about it. We sing some of his hymns at Mass and his Dream of Gerontius was set to music by Elgar. When Pope Benedict came to England he wished to visit Newman’s Rooms in Birmingham.

Going to Rome – It may be some Parishioners wish to go to Rome for the canonisation. One needs to be fully mobile to cope with Rome. Please speak to Fr Anthony or Deacon David.
